Join us on Monday 16th January at the Kenmore Hotel to celebrate the official opening of the 2017 Tay salmon fishing season.
Kenmore has been the venue for this historic occasion since 1947 & this year will be particularly special as we mark the 70th anniversary.
There is a sense of expectation as the atmosphere builds to the opening of Scotland's most celebrated salmon season opening day. And whatever the weather, fishermen travel from all over the country to be present at this historic occasion at the Kenmore Hotel, near Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire.
It is a truly impressive sight to see the fishermen and their supporters line up behind the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band and march to the Tay a few hundred yards away. The fishermen then take up their positions along both banks of the mighty Tay while the final ceremonies are performed on the river itself and a toast is offered to bless the water for the new season.
Once the first cast is made in the middle of the river, the cry goes out "Tight lines" as all the fishermen make their first cast for the new season.
The Boar's Head will be open from 9am.
8.15am - 9.00am: Anglers and guests including Provost Liz Grant and three times World Speycasting Champion Scott Mackenzie, will assemble in the village square for tea, coffee & a wee dram of Dewar's
9.10am: Opening ceremony – with welcome speeches from Scott Mackenzie & Provost Liz Grant
9.25am: Vale of Atholl Pipe Band lead the procession, followed by the assembled company of anglers, to the riverbank
9.30am: Blessing of the boat by Provost Liz Grant / first cast is made by Scott Mackenzie, heralding the official opening of the 2017 Tay Salmon Fishing Season
There will be fly casting & fly tying demonstrations from Tomas Kolesinskas throughout the morning and onsite assistance from fishing professional Mark Bowler.
Salmon fishing permits are available at a cost of £25 / day for hotel residents & £30 / day for non-residents.
Permits can only be purchased from 8am on the day, from the Kenmore Hotel.
